Eight months after being slammed for days by Hurricane Dorian’s sustained 185-mph winds, life is slowly returning to normal for Quentin Hall and his family in his native Bahamas. There is always something that requires his attention, whether it’s replacing the family car that finally gave out or finding the rare available carpenter to work on the bathroom.
The genesis of Gonzaga’s international recruiting push started with an exchange student, when Tommy Lloyd was growing up in Kelso, Washington. Lloyd, now an assistant coach for the men’s basketball team, was a teenager when his parents agreed to host an exchange student while Lloyd’s older brother was studying abroad.
Hosts Eric Edelstein, Sam Adams and Matt Santangelo talked with Gonzaga coaches Tommy Lloyd and Lisa Fortier about their programs’ international recruiting efforts. The evening doubled as a fundraiser to help Quentin Hall rebuild his home on Grand Bahama.
They get together more than most realize. And not just those who shared a locker room while playing on the same team. Since the mid-1990s, and definitely after Casey Calvary’s legendary tip-in against Florida in 1999 that led to the program’s first-ever Elite Eight, if you’ve pulled on that jersey with the name most national broadcasters mispronounce and spent a little too much time at Jack and Dan’s, you’re family. Matt Santangelo isn’t sure Quentin Hall remembers their first practice together, but Santangelo certainly does.
The actor, best known for comedic guest-starring roles, got his start calling the shots as the Bulldogs marched to improbably runs in the NCAA tournament. The 2000 alumnus will be a guest host at a fundraiser event Monday for former Bulldog standout Quentin Hall.
The evening will feature tons of cool videos, fun and revealing live interviews on stage with Gonzaga men’s assistant coach Tommy Lloyd and women’s head coach Lisa Fortier, as well as lots of former players, including beloved Bahamian Bulldog Quentin Hall. Oh, and Big Ed will be there.
Casey Calvary tips-in Quentin Hall's missed shot to push Gonzaga past Florida and into the Elite 8.
About the only thing Hurricane Dorian didn’t destroy or damage was Quentin Hall’s spirit. “All I can say is I’m alive and well,” the Bahamas native said in a telephone interview Wednesday. “You know me, I’m a real upbeat person.”
Quentin Hall sat courtside for a few minutes during Friday’s Gonzaga-Connecticut game in the Battle 4 Atlantis and his first thought was his last game as a Bulldog.
