The debate began shortly after Gonzaga outlasted Duke and picked up steam a couple days later when Kansas rallied past Tennessee in overtime. It simmered over the weekend. Two strong resumes, coming off big-time wins. Two worthy candidates, but room for only one atop the rankings … unless the AP media panel votes one way and USA Today coaches go in a different direction.

Zags men find out Sunday if they are No. 1 seed

While a dozen or more teams around the country fret over the last four in and the last four out, the question in these parts is if No. 1-ranked Gonzaga will be a No. 1 seed in the NCAA tournament. Our request to sit silently in the back of the selection committee’s hotel suite in Indianapolis was denied, so we asked’s Joe Lunardi, who has made Bracketology part of the college basketball lexicon. He pegged all 65 teams (31 are givens with automatic bids) in 2008 and had 67 of 68 last year.

It’s official: Gonzaga No. 1 in college basketball

The Gonzaga Bulldogs have gone where no Zags have gone before. The Bulldogs reached No. 1 in the AP men’s basketball poll Monday for the first time in program history. Gonzaga (29-2) received 51 first-place votes and 1,607 points to outdistance No. 2 Indiana (seven first-place votes, 1,517 points).
