In his last college football game, Nick Rolovich threw eight touchdown passes and led Hawaii to an upset of then-No. 9 BYU. That was in 2001, when the Rainbow Warriors finished with a 9-4 record, but had nowhere to go for the postseason. The next year the Hawaii Bowl was born. Fast-forward 15 years and Rolovich finds himself leading Hawaii into its first bowl game in six seasons when it takes on Middle Tennessee on Saturday in the very game he had a hand in creating.
Rashaad Penny returned the opening kickoff 100 yards for a touchdown and San Diego State routed Cincinnati 42-7 in the Hawaii Bowl on Thursday.
HONOLULU – Driphus Jackson had his best game of the year by passing for 318 yards and three touchdowns, and Rice completed a remarkable turnaround with a 30-6 victory over Fresno State on Wednesday night in the Hawaii Bowl. The Owls (8-5) started the season at 0-3 and ended it with their second bowl win in the last three years.
HONOLULU – Rashaad Reynolds returned two fumbles for touchdowns, helping Oregon State beat Boise State 38-23 in the Hawaii Bowl on Tuesday night. The Beavers (7-6) stopped a five-game slide and set several records in handing Boise State its worst loss in two months.
HONOLULU – SMU coach June Jones felt and looked right at home when he walked into Aloha Stadium. Dressed in slacks and flip flops, he strolled down a corridor where portraits of Hawaii’s biggest stars hung on the wall, most of them players that Jones coached during an eight-year tenure that made him so popular in paradise that some suggested he run for governor. When Jones left a news conference for the Hawaii Bowl, he flashed the “Hang Loose” symbol to faces he has seen for years.
HONOLULU – Austin Davis threw two touchdown passes, including a 4-yarder late in the game, and No. 22 Southern Mississippi earned a school-record 12th victory by holding off Nevada 24-17 in the Hawaii Bowl on Saturday night. Davis overcame a shaky start for Conference USA champion Southern Miss (12-2), and the Golden Eagles’ defense shut down Nevada’s potent pistol attack, led by Lampford Mark, in the second half.
Damaris Johnson broke loose for 326 all-purpose yards to set an NCAA career record and Tulsa took advantage of six first-half turnovers to beat No. 24 Hawaii 62-35 in the Hawaii Bowl on Friday night.
