MISSOULA – Washington State had plans to run and score at Dahlberg Arena Wednesday, but the Montana Lady Griz had the quick start and strong finish, in a 90-78 win over the Cougars in the WNIT. The Cougars had 22 points from Lia Galdeira and Sage Romberg added 18 in her final collegiate game, but much of that came too late. The Lady Griz (22-11), playing in front of a vocal crowd of 2,125, ran out to leads of 20-2, 19-8 and 35-19.

Jamar, Cherry lead Montana to Big Sky title, NCAA tournament berth

MISSOULA – Kareem Jamar scored 20 points, Will Cherry had 18 and Montana held off Weber State 67-64 Saturday night to win the Big Sky tournament title for the second consecutive year. Cherry’s 3-pointer extended Montana’s lead to 62-57 with 46 seconds to go. After Frank Otis’ layup pulled Weber State within three, Jordan Gregory made two free throws with 22 seconds remaining for the Grizzlies.

Griz handle Eagles late

MISSOULA – Jordan Gregory hit four 3-pointers and scored 17 points Thursday night, helping Montana stay unbeaten in Big Sky Conference play with an 81-66 victory over Eastern Washington. Gregory was 6 of 7 from the field, including 4 of 5 from behind the arc. Spencer Coleman added 15 points off the bench for the Grizzlies (7-4, 3-0), and Mathias Ward scored 12.

Man sentenced in slaying

Norman “Griz” Ford called “I love you, son” to his 3-year-old as he left a federal courtroom Thursday to serve a 17 1/2-year prison sentence for his part in the murder of Gary Flett Jr. The sentence was “fitting,” said U.S. District Court Judge Edward Shea. Ford got half the time given to the man who fired the gun.
