OAKLAND, Calif. — J.A. Happ acknowledged his frustration through a series of losses and no-decisions that had piled up since early May. He got a breather Friday night.
OAKLAND, Calif. — This was another one of those games Thursday night for the Seattle Mariners that, if viewed in isolation, might not seem so bad. Veteran Oakland lefty Scott Kazmir is among the American League leaders in earned-run average. So mustering little in a 4-0 loss…OK, it happens.

SEATTLE – Before he took the mound on Sunday afternoon and achieved a career milestone significant enough to warrant stadium-wide recognition, Felix Hernandez called his mom. It was Mother’s Day, after all, so Hernandez phoned home to Venezuela to check in with his mother, Mirian.
Felix Hernandez became the fourth-youngest player to reach 2,000 career strikeouts while giving up two runs over seven innings to lead the Seattle Mariners to a 4-3 win against the Oakland Athletics on Sunday.
SEATTLE – Having dug themselves into a last-place hole a month into the season, the Mariners are in no position to turn away anyone’s charity. The Mariners took advantage of four Oakland errors Saturday to run away with their most lopsided victory of the season, a 7-2 victory before a crowd of 37,441 on a beautiful evening at Safeco Field.
SEATTLE — Robinson Cano had three hits and an RBI, and the Seattle Mariners took advantage of Oakland’s season-high four errors in a 7-2 victory over the Athletics on Saturday night.
SEATTLE – It figured to be a tall order Friday for these ailing Mariners to find a tonic while facing Oakland ace Sonny Gray in the start of a nine-game homestand at Safeco Field. Because while the Athletics are also tumbling through the season’s opening weeks, Gray has been their Felix Hernandez, their once-every-five-games elixir. And Gray didn’t disappoint for six innings.

OAKLAND, Calif. – The narrative the Mariners want to see from Saturday’s rollicking 5-4 victory over Oakland in 11 innings is one that points to their resilience and improved ability to land and absorb punches. And that was there, certainly. Shortstop Brad Miller embodied two major pluses, first as the middleman in a game-saving relay that cut down what would have been the winning run at the plate in the 10th inning.
OAKLAND, Calif. – As fiascos go, this was a pretty complete effort Friday night by the Mariners in a 12-0 collapse against the Oakland Athletics at the O.co Coliseum. Heck, if you forfeit, you only lose 9-0.

Pitcher Jon Lester agreed Tuesday night to a $155 million, six-year contract with the Chicago Cubs, a person familiar with the negotiations said, the first big deal of the offseason involving a top-level starting pitcher. The person spoke on condition of anonymity because the agreement had not been announced. Lester’s contract, agreed to on the second day of baseball’s winter meetings, contains an option for 2021 that would make the deal worth $170 million over seven seasons. The average annual value of $25.8 million is the second-highest for a pitcher behind Clayton Kershaw’s $30.7 million as part of a $215 million, seven-year deal with the Los Angeles Dodgers that began this year. A three-time All-Star, Lester turns 31 next month. – Associated Press
Sonny Gray pitched Oakland into baseball’s last playoff spot, Detroit and St. Louis clinched division crowns and Jordan Zimmermann threw a no-hitter in a final-day drama made even more memorable by Derek Jeter’s farewell. Going into Sunday, no postseason matchup was certain. David Price, who pitched Detroit to the A.L. Central crown, and some pals across the majors quickly settled all of them.
Felix Hernandez threw five shutout innings to secure the American League ERA title, but the Mariners were eliminated from the postseason despite a 4-1 win over the Los Angeles Angels on Sunday.
Jeff Samardzija pitched seven strong innings and received some rare run support to snap a four-start winless stretch, and the Oakland Athletics kept hold of the top A.L. wild card spot by beating the A.L. West champion Los Angeles Angels 8-4 Monday night in Oakland, California. The A’s moved one game ahead of Kansas City for the first wild card.
SEATTLE – If the Mariners are going to find their way into the postseason for the first time in more than a decade, they’ll need to be the best road team in the American League for one final trip. The Mariners failed to make up ground on Oakland in their next-to-last homestand of the season.
It’s been a while – 13 years, to be exact. But Saturday night, the Mariners and their fans got to relive the excitement of playoff baseball again. You remember, that nerve-wracking, pulse-pounding, low-scoring, run-savoring, teeth-gnashing grind of a game.
Jed Lowrie drew a bases-loaded walk from Fernando Rodney with two outs in the 10th inning to force in the tiebreaking run and lift the Oakland Athletics to a 3-2 victory over the Seattle Mariners on Saturday night.
