Area roundup: WSU women rally past Colorado 69-59

Washington State erased a 15-point deficit in the second half and rallied for a 69-59 victory against Colorado in a Pacific-12 Conference women’s basketball game at Beasley Coliseum in Pullman on Friday.

The Cougars (11-12 overall, 4-7 Pac-12) trailed 40-25 after the Buffaloes’ Jaylyn Sherrod scored a little more than a minute into the third quarter. WSU pulled within 46-41 with Chanelle Molina’s basket with 4 seconds left in the period.

Molina’s jumper with 2:50 remaining gave the Cougs the lead for good at 55-54.

Molina finished with 27 points and seven rebounds, and Borislava Hristova added 17 points.

Mya Hollingshed scored 18 points for Colorado (14-8, 3-8).

Whitworth 60, Lewis and Clark 57: Sydney Abbott scored a game-high 24 points, and the Pirates held on down the stretch for a Northwest Conference victory in Portland.

Talia Brandner’s free throw with 8.2 seconds left provided Whitworth (11-9, 4-7 NWC) with a three-point lead. The Pioneers’ Peyton Romo missed a contested 3-point attempt from the corner as time expired.

Quincy McDeid added 16 points for the Pirates.

Delsie Johnson scored 13 points for LC (2-17, 1-10).

College baseball

Whitworth 3, Pomona-Pitzer 1: Pirates pitchers Matthew Young and Brett Thomas combined to limit Pomona-Pitzer to four hits, and Whitworth opened its season with a nonconference victory in Claremont, California.

Young struck out five and allowed one run over six innings, and Thomas pitched three perfect innings to close out the game.

Luke Bruno hit a run-scoring double for a 2-1 lead in the seventh inning, and Liam Fitzgerald’s two-out single in the eighth provided the final margin for Whitworth. Jaxsen Sweum hit a solo homer in the fourth for the Pirates.

Whitworth’s Ben Wintringer was 3 for 5, and Dawson Warner had two hits.
