Area roundup: CC Spokane baseball defeats Mt. Hood at NWAC Championship

Brenden Duncan hit a three-run home run, and CC Spokane beat Mt. Hood 9-3 Saturday at the NWAC Championship in Longview, Washington.

Duncan’s shot came in the first inning and staked the Sasquatch (31-16) to a 4-0 lead.

In the third, Jase Edwards added an RBI single and Jermaine Ducham drove in two with a single to make it 7-0, and CCS cruised from there.

Duncan, Edwards, Christian Padilla and Justin Lutz scored two runs apiece for the Sasquatch, who will play again Sunday.

Arizona 15, Washington State 7: Justin Wylie went 3 for 3 with two home runs, and the Wildcats (32-24, 15-14 Pac-12) defeated the Cougars (11-42-1, 3-26-1) at Bailey-Brayton Field in the regular-season finale.

Austin Wells added three RBIs for Arizona, which had a hit from all nine starters. The Wildcats closed the season on a 10-game win streak and will hope for an NCAA Tournament berth when the field is announced on Monday.

Kyle Manzardo notched three RBIs and Collin Montez had three hits for WSU. Danny Sinatro added a single to push his hit streak to 12 games.

Track and field

Keshun McGee became the first Eastern Washington athlete to qualify for the NCAA Championships in two events, placing sixth in the triple jump in the West Preliminary Round in Sacramento, California.

McGee jumped 52 feet, 4 3/4 inches. He previously qualified in the long jump.

Washington State’s Nick Johnson finished 11th in the 110 hurdles at 13.91 seconds to also qualify for the NCAAs.

Fellow Cougars Peyton Frederickson and Mitch Jacobson moved on in the high jump; Frederickson placed ninth at 7-1 and Jacobson was 10th at 6-11 3/4.

Whitworth’s Marissa Mount placed third in the 3,000 steeplechase at the Division III Championships in Geneva, Ohio.

Mount finished in 10:46.55, nearly three seconds faster than her preliminary run on Thursday.

The Pirate women finished tied for 12th with 18 points. The men notched eight points, placing them in a tie for 34th.
