College baseball: Mac Lardner pitches Gonzaga past Lamar in nonconference shutout

Mac Lardner allowed four hits over seven innings and Troy Johnston crushed a grand slam Saturday, leading Gonzaga to a 16-0 nonconference win over Lamar at Patterson Baseball Complex.

Lardner (5-3) struck out 12 and walked three while throwing 118 pitches. Matthew Henckel worked the final two innings, allowing no hits, striking out two and walking none.

Brett Harris finished 2 for 3 with four runs batted in, starting with a two-run single in the first that staked the Zags (27-20) to a 3-0 lead. He added a solo homer in the third for a 4-0 advantage and a sacrifice fly in the fourth, making it 7-0.

Johnston’s slam in the fifth, his ninth homer of the season, boosted the Bulldogs’ lead to 11-0.

GU’s Ernie Yake finished 3 for 5 with two runs and two RBIs. He and Isaac Barrera had two-run singles during the Zags’ four-run seventh.

The Cardinals (16-33) were held without an extra-base hit.

GU came from behind to win Friday’s game 7-6. The teams will complete the series at 3 p.m. today.
