College baseball: Three-run fifth inning carries BYU past Gonzaga in West Coast Conference

Brock Hale’s three-run double in the fifth inning Friday helped BYU defeat visiting Gonzaga 7-4 in West Coast Conference baseball in Provo, Utah.

The Bulldogs (7-9, 1-1) struck first on an Austin Pinorini sacrifice fly to left field, scoring Ernie Yake. The Cougars (13-4, 1-1) responded with a run in the first.

The Zags took a 3-1 lead in the second, highlighted by Nick Nyquist’s RBI double.

The game was tied at 3 after four, but BYU took control on Hale’s big double.

The Zags play the Cougars on Saturday at noon in the rubber game.

Arizona State 6, Washington State 0: Gage Workman hit two home runs and had four RBIs and the 19th-ranked Sun Devils (17-0) blanked the Cougars (6-11) in a Pac-12 opener for both teams in Tempe, Arizona.

ASU scored four runs in the third to take a 5-0 lead.

The Cougars had eight hits but left nine on base.

Myles Denson went 3 for 4 for the Sun Devils.

WSU starter Brandon White (2-1) allowed five earned runs, but Cougars relievers allowed only one run on four hits in 4 2/3 innings.

Washington State plays Arizona State on Saturday at 6 p.m.
