Tim Beckham led off the bottom of the eighth inning with a pinch-hit home run, giving the Seattle Mariners a 5-4 victory against the visiting St. Louis Cardinals on Tuesday night.

Omar Narvaez added a two-run shot as the Mariners snapped a four-game losing streak.

Jose Martinez hit two solo home runs and Yairo Munoz added a two-run shot for the Cardinals.

Beckham’s homer came on a 1-2 count against right-hander Giovanny Gallegos (1-1).

Mariners right-hander Austin Adams (1-0) struck out all four batters he faced to earn his first major-league victory. Lefty Roenis Elias pitched the ninth for his 11th save of the season.

Of note

M’s left-hander Wade LeBlanc is 3-0 with a 3.34 ERA in six “relief” appearances following an opener. In 32 1/3 innings in those games, he has struck out 25 and walked seven. … The Cardinals placed 3B Matt Carpenter on the 10-day injured list with lower back pain.

By the numbers

5: Austin Nola went 2 for 4 and has hits in each of his first five career starts for the M’s, just the second first baseman in franchise history to accomplish that. Alvin Davis hit safely in his first nine career games in 1984.

Our take from Right Field

The M’s might have found the answer at the back of their bullpen, as Adams was dominant in his 1 1/3 innings and Elias struck out two more in the ninth.

Up next

The M’s continue their three-game interleague series against St. Louis at 7:10 p.m. Wednesday at T-Mobile Park. RHP Mike Leake (7-7, 4.63 ERA) is scheduled to start against Cardinals RHP Adam Wainwright (5-7, 4.35).
