Area college basketball: Whitworth men fall to hot-shooting Whitman

WALLA WALLA – Austin Butler and Joey Hewitt scored 24 points apiece and Whitman defeated Whitworth 110-98 Tuesday in Northwest Conference men’s basketball.

Jack Stewart added 19 points and Darne Duckett scored 15 for the Blues (19-1, 11-0 NWC), who are ranked No. 3 in the poll and have won 15 straight games.

Both teams scorched the nets. Whitworth shot 57.8 percent (37 of 68) from the field, while Whitman hit 55.1 percent (38 of 69).

Ben College led the No. 10 Pirates (16-4, 8-3) with 24 points, and Kyle Roach notched 17 points, six rebounds and five assists. Isaiah Hernandez added 15 points for Whitworth, which has lost two straight after winning 13 of 14.


Whitman 89, Whitworth 78: Taylor Chambers totaled 18 points and five assists, and the Blues (16-4, 10-1 NWC) stymied the Pirates’ (10-10, 5-6) comeback attempt in Walla Walla.

Maegen Martin added 16 points and seven rebounds, and Kaelan Shamseldin notched 15 points and four steals for Whitman.

Camy Aguinaldo led the Pirates with 19 points. Talia Brandner tallied 17 points, and Sydney Abbott added 13 points and four steals.

Whitworth trailed by 18 in the third quarter but opened the fourth on a 14-4 run to close within six. It got within five with a minute left, but Whitman made its last eight free-throw attempts to pull away. The Blues shot 87.5 percent (21 of 24) from the line.
