Less than 24 hours after announcing that Ty Gregorak would not be returning to coach at Montana State for the 2019 season, Bobcats head coach Jeff Choate has announced that Kane Ioane will be taking over that vacancy as defensive coordinator.
That announcement was made Wednesday afternoon, along with Erik Frazier of Western Illinois being named MSU’s new wide receivers coach.
Ioane, a Billings Skyview graduate, is already a Bobcat legend and returns to Bozeman after spending the last two seasons as a quality control analyst at the University of Washington. Ioane was a standout player for the Cats at defensive back, winning Big Sky Defensive Player of the Year honors in 2003 and helping lead Montana State to back to back conference titles.
After graduating from MSU, Ioane joined the Bobcats coaching staff where he stayed serving different roles from 2004 to 2016. In 2015 Ioane was the defensive coordinator under Rob Ash for one season and then remained on Choate’s staff for one season before leaving to Washington.
Along with his defensive coordinator duties for the Bobcats, Ioane will also be the safeties coach.
