EWU hires Ian Shoemaker as offensive coordinator, quarterbacks coach

From staff reports

Eastern Washington University didn’t look far to find its next offensive coordinator.

Only about 160 miles.

On Monday, Central Washington head football coach Ian Shoemaker accepted the job as OC and quarterbacks coach for the Eagles, according to EWU coach Aaron Best.

Shoemaker, who compiled a 38-16 record in five seasons leading the Division II Wildcats, replaces Bodie Reeder, who left after two seasons to become offensive coordinator and quarterbacks coach at the University of North Texas. His hiring is contingent on Shoemaker successfully passing EWU’s mandatory background check.

“We are very fortunate and excited to bring a coach of Ian’s caliber into our program,” said Best. “He has a proven track record at multiple levels of football, and we are privileged to get him on board this late in the game. His Washington roots, head coaching experience, and entire knowledge of the game are all great additions to our program.”

A native of Graham, Wash., Shoemaker led CWU to Great Northwest Athletic Conference championships in 2017 and 2018 behind an offense that put up EWU-like numbers: 44.7.3 yards of total offense and 37.3 points per game.

“I am very excited to be coming to EWU as offensive coordinator,” Shoemaker said. “From growing up in the state of Washington to having a younger brother (Javid Shoemaker) play for the Eagles, I have always considered EWU as an elite university and football program. I am so proud that Coach Best trusts me to do this job, and look forward to working with the great coaching staff and players already in Cheney.”

Eastern Washington, coming off its run to the FCS national championship game, returns a strong core on offense, led by quarterback Eric Barriere, who emerged as a explosive playmaker in place of injured Gage Gubrud. Gubrud has since transferred to Washington State after being granted a sixth year of eligibility.
