Gonzaga edges Portland in 11 innings to complete 3-game sweep

Guthrie Morrison’s RBI single in the top of the 11th inning carried the Gonzaga Bulldogs to a 4-3 victory over the Portland Pilots, completing a three-game sweep in West Coast Conference baseball action on Sunday in Portland.

Troy Johnson’s run-scoring single and a sacrifice fly by Brett Harris staked the Bulldogs (17-14, 10-5) to a 2-0 lead in the top of the third inning. Portland (20-17, 2-13) pulled even in the bottom of the inning on a two-run home run by Cody Hawken.

Gonzaga took a 3-2 lead in the top of the eighth inning when Harris scored on a bunt by Mason Marenco, but the Pilots forced extra innings with a run in the bottom of the ninth on Matt Kelly’s RBI single.

The Bulldogs picked up their fourth straight win when Ernie Yake singled with one out in the 11th and moved to second on an errant pickoff attempt. Morrison followed with the go-ahead single.

Alek Jacob (4-3) pitched the final five innings in relief to pick up the win. He allowed only an unearned run on two hits and two walks, striking out five. Mac Lardner started, allowing two runs on five hits and two walks with nine strikeouts.

Gonzaga will host the Oregon Ducks in nonconference play on Monday at 3 p.m.
