Women’s soccer: Washington State collapses late in 3-1 loss at Arizona State

UPDATED: Thu., Oct. 18, 2018

From staff reports

TEMPE, Ariz. – Washington State’s women’s soccer team held a 1-0 lead with less than 20 minutes to go Thursday, but the Cougars couldn’t finish in a 3-1 loss to Arizona State.

Freshman Molly Myers’ third goal of the season in the final seconds of the first half failed to hold up, as Marleen Schimmer (72nd minute), Wan Deursen (77th) and Natalie Stephens (81st) struck for the Sun Devils in a 9-minute span. Cougars junior Emma Dahline made her first career start in goal and set a personal high with seven saves.

It was the fourth straight loss for 22nd-ranked WSU (10-4-0, 3-4-0 Pac-12) and third consecutive defeat on the road, and snapped a five-match unbeaten streak against ASU (7-5-1, 2-3-1).

The Cougars return to action Sunday at noon against Arizona in Tucson.
