Staff reports

Low scores are usually the norm at the Lilac City Invitational, but the Fairways more than held its own in Thursday’s opening round.

Only five of 31 pros broke 70 as the field dealt with breezy conditions and speedy greens.

Shane Prante, a pro from Olympia, fired a 6-under-par 66 to take a two-stroke lead over Clarkston Country Club’s Drew Reinland and Li Wang, from Sahalee Country Club in Sammamish, Washington.

North Idaho College golf coach Russell Grove, the 2013 champion, is three shots back after shooting a 69. Tacoma’s Derek Barron, the 2016 champ, opened with a 73.

The 72-hole event concludes Sunday.
