Roderick Fisher, Colson Yankoff selected for Army All-American Game

The U.S. Army All-American Bowl is the nation’s premier high school All-American game, featuring the best 100 players in a classic East vs. West match-up every January in San Antonio’s Alamodome.

Last year’s game marked its 17th anniversary and drew a record crowd of 40,568.

The next game will take place on Jan. 6 and will be broadcast live nationally and across the world to soldiers deployed overseas – and it will have a decidedly local flair.

East Valley wide receiver Rodrick Fisher and Coeur d’Alene quarterback Colson Yankoff were selected to participate in the event.

“It’s a thing that I’ve held as a very prestigious award,” Yankoff said at his award ceremony at Coeur d’Alene High on Monday. “I’ve known about the game since a young age, so it’s a blessing to be in this situation.”

Yankoff, who committed to the Washington Huskies, said he didn’t have his best day at his tryout so when he found out at the end of that day, “It was a sweet little surprise,” that he had made the cut.

Fisher, a Washington State commit, found out recently he had been named to the team.

“I was pretty excited,” he said at his presentation ceremony at East Valley High on Tuesday. “It was a little nerve-wracking to realize I was chosen as part of the top 100 players in the country.”

Fisher didn’t go to school as a sophomore when he bounced from home to home and lived on the streets. His football coach, Adam Fisher – along with Fisher’s wife Jolene and two teenaged daughters – took Rodrick in, then obtained court-awarded custody of him last year.

“It shows my growth,”Rodrick Fisher said. “A year ago this couldn’t have even been imagined. It truly just shows the triumph, to keep continuing to work hard and taking it one step at a time because success takes time.”

“I was quite speechless, to be honest,” coach Fisher said about when he was notified of Rodrick’s selection. “To have the opportunity for (Rodrick) to go on to play college football and to play in this game with the elite talent in this country … it’s crazy. It’s absolutely overwhelming in a positive way.”

A total of 351 U.S. Army All-Americans have been selected in the NFL Draft.

The U.S. Army All-American Bowl Selection Committee is comprised of 247Sports, All American Games and its regional scouting network. The selection process kicks off at the U.S. Army National Combine and proceeds across the country during various combines, camps and clinics.
