LONG BEACH, California – Luke Rasmussen, who had been 0 for 5 on the day, hit a one-out RBI single to left field in the bottom of the ninth inning Wednesday to lift Long Beach State (8-8) to an 8-7 win over Washington State (10-5) in nonconference college baseball play.
WSU reliever Scotty Sunitsch (0-1) began the inning by hitting the first two batters. A sacrifice bunt moved both runners up.
Washington State homered four times but committed four errors and surrendered a three-run sixth-inning lead, snapping its seven-game winning streak.
WSU junior right fielder J.J. Hancock recorded three hits, including one of the Cougars’ four homers, the first four-home run game for WSU since playing Eastern Michigan in 2013.
Hancock and sophomore left fielder Justin Harrer hit back-to-back homers in the fourth, the first time the Cougars have accomplished that since Derek Jones and Matt Argyropoulos did so against Arizona in 2011.
Freshmen Dillon Plew and Jon Burghardt both hit their first career homers.
