Spokane Indians build six-run lead only to see it disappear in 10-9 loss

By Johnathan Curley For The Spokesman-Review

The Salem Keizer Volcanoes staged a four-run eighth inning rally before Gustavo Cabrera hit his second home run of the game in the ninth inning to put the Volcanoes ahead 10-9 and defeat the Spokane Indians in Sunday afternoon’s Northwest League game at Avista Stadium.

Spokane starting pitcher Reiver Sanmartin threw five innings and allowed six hits, three runs and no walks. He had five strikeouts.

Indians outfielder Chad Smith led off the first inning with a double and was driven in on an Andretty Cordero groundout for an early 1-0 lead for the Indians (12-19).

S-K countered with a three-run home run by Robinson Medrano to put the Volcanoes ahead 3-1.

Spokane’s response was nothing short of staggering, with two runs in the second inning on a wild pitch and an Austin O’Banion single, four runs in the third inning due to an error and RBI base hits by Melvin Novoa and Christian Inoa, and a two-run home run in the fourth inning by Cordero.

Novoa’s RBI single extended his hitting streak to 10 games, while Cordero’s home run marked his team-leading eighth of the season.

The offensive output resulted in a 9-3 Indians lead after four innings.

Salem-Keizer (14-18) clawed back with a two-run home run by Kevin Rivera in the sixth inning.

The Volcanoes wouldn’t stop there, as they erupted for four runs in the eighth inning against Spokane relief pitcher Jacob Rogers. Samir Vivas took over and permitted the tying run to score on a single by Orlando Garcia to tie the game at 9.

Gustavo Cabrera unleashed a ninth inning solo home run against Vivas to put S-K ahead 10-9.

Reliever Garrett Cave recorded a perfect ninth inning to earn his second save of the season.

The two teams face on Monday for the third game of a five game series at 6:30 p.m.
