The best game this weekend involving an area team is likely Gonzaga Prep’s showdown against 3A powerhouse Eastside Catholic.
The game should have been played at G-Prep and would have been a nice debut on the Bullpups’ newly installed turf.
But when approached by the WIAA to be the featured game in the Emerald City Kickoff Classic Saturday at the University of Washington’s Husky Stadium, it was an easy decision for G-Prep coach Dave McKenna.
McKenna is all about putting his players in competitive challenges. So opening the season on the road in back-to-back weeks certainly meets his chief desire.
Next week the Bullpups travel to San Jose, California, to meet Bellarmine Prep, a Jesuit school like G-Prep.
The Bullpups could start the season 0-2 as they did a year ago.
The 2017 G-Prep team could ultimately prove to be better than the Greater Spokane League champ a year ago.
- Closer to the area, in a game that could be entertaining, Coeur d’Alene, coming off a season-opening loss at Folsom, California, visits Central Valley on Friday. CdA played without ultratalented senior quarterback Colson Yankoff last week. There’s a possibility he could play Friday. “Maybe a series or two,” CdA coach Shawn Amos said. “He needs to pass strength tests with his physical therapist.” CdA had all sorts of difficulties last week. But Amos walked away encouraged. CV has a number of new skill players. The Bears have some big shoes to fill on defense. CdA is likely to make improvements over its opener whether Yankoff plays much or not. CV will be curious to see how it matches up with the Vikings.
- In other games Friday, East Valley takes on North Central at Albi Stadium, Post Falls faces Mead at Eastern Washington University’s Roos Field and Lake City faces Lewis and Clark at Albi.
