Gonzaga’s depth already being tested

Gonzaga’s roster has some depth, and it’s being tested before the games begin.

Coach Mark Few declined to say if sophomore guard Josh Perkins will play in Saturday’s exhibition game against West Georgia. Perkins was charged last month with physical control of a vehicle while under the influence.

“We’ll handle it like we do everything,” Few said. “There’s going to be a part where he’s going to have to pay a price but I’m big on the learning part of it, remorse and repentance and moving forward.

“We’re working our way through that both with the school and within our program. I’m sure we’ll have something for you Saturday.”

Sophomore forward Jeremy Jones suffered a high ankle sprain in the scrimmage against Baylor last weekend. He was riding a stationary bike after Thursday’s practice.

“He’ll be out for a while,” said Few, whose team opens the season against Utah Valley on Friday, Nov. 11.

Center Przemek Karnowski has sat out selected practices as he continues to recover from back surgery. He missed practice Tuesday with the flu.

“He’s very much a work in progress, shape wise, basketball timing wise,” Few said. “I don’t know about a (minutes) restriction but his lungs and legs are putting him on a restriction as far keeping up with the game. Hopefully he’ll keep getting better and better.”

Freshman wing Zach Norvell isn’t at full speed after undergoing knee surgery about three months ago.

“It’s kind of a mystery, frustrating to him, frustrating to us,” Few said. “He’s just not moving the way he was before surgery.”
