A.L. Central race stirs

Associated Press

David Price bounced back from an alarming start and Miguel Cabrera homered twice, hitting one of Detroit’s three homers off Cleveland’s Corey Kluber, as the Tigers rolled to a 12-1 road win on Monday to slow the Indians’ climb in the standings.

Price gave up one run and eight hits in seven innings. The left-hander was coming off a troubling loss to New York in which he allowed nine consecutive hits in one inning and eight runs over two. Price called it “probably the worst game I’ve ever had in my life.”

But he was more like himself against the sleepy Indians, who had won six of seven to get within 3 1/2 games of first in the A.L. Central.

Cabrera hit a two-run homer in the first inning off Kluber and Victor Martinez and J.D. Martinez connected for consecutive shots in the third. Cabrera homered again in the eighth off rookie Bryan Price. He went 4 for 5 with four runs and three RBIs.

Tigers rookie Tyler Collins hit his first major league homer, a three-run shot in the ninth.

Royals 4, Rangers 3

Salvador Perez homered and drove in three runs, and Kansas City beat visiting Texas to snap a three-game losing streak.

Perez, who had three hits, went deep in the third with Alex Gordon aboard. His two-out double in the first scored Gordon, who had singled and swiped second.

Yordano Ventura allowed three runs, two earned, and five hits in 6 1/3 innings for Kansas City. The right-hander, who was skipped on his previous turn in the rotation due to a sore back, struck out seven and walked four.

Kelvin Herrera, Wade Davis and Greg Holland combined for 2 2/3 hitless innings.Carlos Peguero, who was just brought up from Triple-A Omaha, doubled in the fifth and scored on Mike Moustakas’ single to give the Royals a 4-0 advantage.

Texas responded with a run in the sixth and two in the seventh, cutting the Royals’ lead to one run.
