New system should bring wind, rain for weekend

The outdoor weekend gets off to a fine start today, but we’re going to drop back into the cool and wet side of spring starting tonight.

Highs today in Spokane should reach the upper 60s before a new storm system arrives. A quarter inch of rain is possible in Spokane overnight.

National Weather forecasters said that a cold front passing through on Friday morning will bring a shift in winds and create a small risk for thunderstorms after 2 p.m.

South wind gusts of 20 to 25 mph could arrive Thursday night in wind-prone locations. Winds will pick up behind a cold front early Friday.

Spokane could see southwest wind gusts to 29 mph Friday afternoon.

Other locations of the Inland Northwest could see gusts of 30 to 40 mph. The windiest places on Friday are going to be the Columbia Basin, West Plains, Waterville Plateau, Blue Mountains and exposed mountain ridge tops.

Travel through the basin in high-profile vehicles could be difficult as a result, forecasters said.

Boaters seeking to take advantage of the spring trout season on area lakes need to know that winds could whip up quickly and turn conditions dangerous, mainly Friday afternoon.

Showers should continue through Saturday before easing off on Saturday night and Sunday. Rainfall amounts during showers on Friday and Saturday will be greatest along the mountains.

Highs on Friday and Saturday drop to around 60 in Spokane and then rebound to the mid-60s on Sunday with a slight chance of showers. Lows will run from the upper 30s to upper 40s.
