Sports in brief: Griffey collects bonuses

Baseball: Ken Griffey Jr. will collect $3.15 million of a potential $5 million for returning to the Seattle Mariners.

The 39-year-old slugger earned an additional $1.15 million in bonuses tied to playing time and home attendance, according to contract details obtained by the Associated Press. That’s on top of the $2 million in base salary the active home run leader received in his one-year contract.

A spike in playing time over the final week of the season, when Griffey started five times in six games as the designated hitter, earned him an additional $250,000 for eclipsing 450 plate appearances. He finished with 456.

Griffey said Sunday he was going home to his family in Florida to discuss whether to play again in 2010 or retire.

Keo, Farquhar players of week

Football: An Idaho safety and the Vandals’ kicker are among this week’s top players in the Western Athletic Conference.

The conference on Monday picked Vandals safety Shiloh Keo as the top defensive player for his performance in Saturday’s 31-29 victory over Colorado State. The conference also tapped Idaho kicker Trey Farquhar as the special teams player of the week.

Keo had 15 tackles, including 12 solo, and an interception against the Rams Saturday night. His interception came in the final minute, sealing the victory and helping the Vandals improve to 4-1.

Farquhar, a freshman, was good on all four extra-point attempts and added a 47-yard field goal in the closing moments of the first half, putting Idaho up 20-7. The kick ties for the second longest of the season so far among WAC kickers.
