One day after suffering its first dual-meet loss of the season, the North Idaho Cardinals wrestling team wrapped up its regular season with two victories at the Apodaca Duals in Powell, Wyo.
The Cardinals won the final four matches to earn a 27-15 victory over North Iowa Area CC in its first dual of the day. Tim McGoldrick (141 pounds) pinned his opponent in 30 seconds. With North Iowa Area leading 15-9, Celic Bell scored a pin at 174 to tie the match. Kamron Jackson followed with a pin at 184 pounds to put the Cardinals up for good. Rudi Burtschi (197) and Spenser Sharp (285) closed out the match with decision victories.
In the second match, Bell scored another pinfall victory to help the Cardinals (14-1) beat the host Northwest Trappers 30-15.
The two dual victories gave North Idaho 599 all-time wins. A dual against Western Wyoming was cancelled.
Track and field
Five meet records and 11 NCAA provisional qualifying marks were achieved at the Cougar Indoor Invitational held Friday and Saturday at WSU’s Indoor Practice Facility.
Washington State’s Robert Williams set the meet record in the 60-meter hurdles preliminaries with a time of 7.85 seconds.
Trent Arrivey of Washington State and Utah State’s Clint Silcock each tied the meet record with jumps of 7 feet, 21/2 inches in the high jump.
Allix Lee-Painter of the University of Idaho won the women’s 3,000-meter run in a meet-record time of 9:51.25.
Freshman Rory Buck swam to victory in three individual events and the Whitworth Pirates’ men claimed their 64th consecutive Northwest League dual victory with a 116-89 decision over the Puget Sound Loggers at Tacoma.
Buck won the 50 freestyle in 24.37 seconds, the 100 freestyle in 53.09 seconds and the 100 breaststroke in 1:05.30.
On the women’s side, Natalie Turner and Brittany Gresset were double winners to lead Whitworth to a 130-75 victory over Puget Sound.
Whitworth’s teams will compete at the conference championships Feb. 13-15 at the King County Aquatic Center in Federal Way, Washington.
The women hope to win a second straight Northwest Conference title, while the men are aiming for a seventh conference championship in a row.
Conner Olstad, Jacob Walsh and Tyler Mort scored goals during the shootout to lead the Spokane Braves to a 5-4 Kootenay International Junior Hockey League victory over the Columbia Valley Rockies at Eagles Ice-A-Rena.
