The leaderboard for the Tucson Chrysler Classic was jammed until late finishers Jeff Maggert and Steve Jones came along.
Maggert eagled the second hole and birdied three of the last four for a 6-under-par 66, and Jones, who finished on the front nine, birdied four of the last eight holes to share the first-round lead of the $1.3 million event.
Former Pullman resident Kirk Triplett finished two shots back.
Japan’s Natsuko Noro, who received an invitation to participate in her first U.S. tournament less than a month ago, shot a 7-under-par 65 to take a two-stroke lead in the first round of the Hawaiian Ladies Open in Honolulu.
Leading money winner Annika Sorenstam and Kelly Robbins were at 67 along with Betsy King and Tracy Kerdyk. Clarkston’s Robin Walton is at 73.
