Strong Finish Sends Reid Into Top Spot

By Compiled From Wire Services

Mike Reid overcame a slow start for a 6-under-par 66 Saturday to take a one-stroke lead over Paul Stankowski after three rounds of the Hawaiian Open in Honolulu.

After 54 holes, Reid, a 20-year veteran on the PGA Tour who last won in 1988, was at 16-under 200. Stankowski charged into second with a 64 on an up-and-down day.

Reid was down by as many as three strokes early in the round after bogeying the third and fourth holes. But that was it for over-par scores for the day. He birdied three par-5s and two par-3s as well as the par-4 14th.

Tiger Woods, whose rounds have gotten progressively worse in the Australian Masters, trails Peter O’Malley of Australia by six strokes going into today’s final round in Melbourne.

Woods didn’t capitalize much on O’Malley’s par 73 in the third round over the difficult Huntingdale course. He shot a 72, after rounds of 68 and 70.

Zimbabwean Nick Price, seeking his first victory in 14 months, surged to a five-stroke lead after three rounds of the Dimension Data pro-am golf tournament in Sun City, South Africa.

Annika Sorenstam, trying to win her second tournament in as many tries in 1997, shot a 3-under-par 69 to open a three-stroke lead in the Los Angeles Women’s Championship.

Finishing her round as darkness fell, Sorenstam parred the final five holes and was 9-under at 135 after two rounds of the three-day event.

Ellie Gibson, winless in her seven years on the LPGA Tour, was second with a 69 that left her at 138.

Bob Eastwood is the second-day leader in the Senior GTE Classic after he put together his best round of the season at Lutz, Fla., posting a 65 for a one-shot advantage over Gil Morgan.
