Gardner’s Front Nine Earns Win

Mark Gardner from the Creek at Qualchan shot a 29 over the front nine en route to a 6-under-par 65 and victory in the first Washington Trust Pro-Am of the season Monday at Quail Ridge Golf Course in Lewiston.

Pro Dan Porter of Downriver was second, two shots back, and professional Mark Rohde, of Rohde’s Golf Studio, and Avondale amateur Troy Blood tied for the third lowest score at 68. Steve Prugh, Manito pro, was fourth with a 69. Three tied at 70.

John Bergeman (73-8), Creek at Qualchan, and Jim Schoesler (72-7), Spokane CC, tied for the low net amateur score in the 0-8 handicap division with 65s.

Jerry Camp Jr. (77-12), Creek at Qualchan, Dave Johnson (75-10), Rohde’s, and Rick Biel (77-12), Downriver, tied for the 9-13 handicap low net with 65s.

WTB golfers hit the course again today at Clarkston Country Club.

The Creek at Qualchan men’s club will hold its first meeting of the year Wednesday at 7 p.m. at the clubhouse, 301 E. Meadowland Road.

Greater Spokane League softball

North Central rallied and Rogers continued what it started as both earned wins Monday.

At Gonzaga Prep, the Indians scored all their runs in the top of the sixth with two outs for a 3-1 victory.

NC (2-0, 6-0) loaded the bases and scored two runs on Bullpups (1-1, 2-4) errors before Juliana Cook singled in the final run. Janessa Karstens pitched a one-hitter, striking out 11.

At Shadle Park, Crystal Perry drove in four runs and had a home run as the Pirates (2-2) beat the Highlanders (0-3) 17-12 in the completion of a game halted Friday by darkness.

With the game tied at 12 in the top of the eighth, Rogers scored five runs. Angie Vulcano had a two-run double.


Nearly 200 female gymnasts from Washington and Idaho are expected for the Lilac Cup Invitational, sponsored by Lilac City Gymnastics Center, on Saturday and Sunday in the Whitworth Fieldhouse.

Doors open at 8 a.m. both days. Admission is $4 for adults and $2 for children 12 and under. A special family rate also is available. Optionals begin at 6:45 p.m. Saturday.


The third annual Snowboard Festival at Lookout Pass will be held Saturday. The day includes a Boardercross event, snowboard demos, live music and a poker run.

Western Hockey League playoffs

Dan Tompkins scored twice, including the winner, as Seattle edged visiting Kamloops 3-2 Monday night to cut the Blazers’ lead in the best-of-seven WHL West series to 2-1.

Deron Quint also scored for Seattle. Bob Maudie scored both Kamloops goals.
