Faxon Soars Atop Leaderboard With Third-Round Birdie Binge

By Compiled From Wire Services

Brad Faxon birdied seven of the last 10 holes Saturday for a 66 and joined Steve Stricker, who also went on a late birdie binge, atop the leaderboard after three rounds of the Hawaiian Open.

Faxon started the day at 3 under and birdied Nos. 10 and 12, then finished with a flurry over the final five holes with four more birdies for a 30 on the back nine of the oceanside Waialae Country Club course.

At Lutz, Fla., Isao Aoki of Japan was the only player under par after two rounds of the GTE Suncoast Classic, shooting a 5-under 66 for a five-shot lead over a group that included Jack Nicklaus.

Aoki, 53, has shot a 3-under 139 on the weather-beaten Tournament Players Club of Tampa Bay course in the Senior PGA Tour event.

Nicklaus shot a second-round 68, Bob Murphy 68, Terry Dill 71, Mike McCullough 71, Calvin Peete 72 and Al Geiberger 73; all stand at 2-over-par 144.

At Johannesburg, South Africa, local favorite Ernie Els shot three birdies during a rain-abbreviated second round to open a two-shot lead in the South African PGA Championship.

Els only finished 11 of the scheduled 18 holes on Saturday, and faces the possibility of playing 25 holes today to complete the tournament.
