Hanson Falls Four Behind

First-round leader Tracy Hanson of Rathdrum, Idaho, struggled to a 74 at the Star Bank LPGA Classic in Dayton, Ohio, and is four shots back.

Leader Juli Inkster shot a 4-under-par 68 for a 36-hole 137 total.

Pat Hurst shot her second 70 to hold second with one round to play in the $500,000 event on the 6,319-yard Country Club of the North Course.

Hanson was tied with Hurst for second until bogeying No. 18.

At Harrison, N.Y., Vijay Singh, unable to defend his title at the Buick Classic last year because of back problems, put himself in good shape to win it this year with a 4-under 67 that gave him a one-stroke lead after 54 holes.

Bobby Wadkins was alone in second at 6-under 207 after bogeying the par-5, 535-yard 18th at Westchester Country Club for a 69.

Nick Faldo, the three-time winner of the British Open and two-time Masters champion, had a 68 to share third at 208 with Bruce Fleischer, who had a 69.

At Malvern, Pa., J.C. Snead managed only a 2-over 72 but maintained a one-shot lead in the Bell Atlantic Classic when only six players managed to break par in the third round.

Dave Stockton and Jim Colbert, who aced the par-3 seventh hole, shot 71 to finish within a stroke at 139.

At Albuquerque, N.M., Arizona State, with four players among the top 10, rallied past New Mexico to win the NCAA West Regional team title by eight strokes.

New Mexico’s Mike Sauer, who shared or held the lead throughout, was the top individual with a 54-hole total of 8-under 208. Sauer shot a final-round 71 to go with rounds of 68 and 69.

U.S. Amateur champion Tiger Woods, a freshman at Stanford, finished in a tie for 18th after shooting a third consecutive even-par 72. The Cardinal was sixth.
