Hale Irwin and Ben Crenshaw, two 40-somethings who aren’t ready to concede anything to youth, showed why in the second round of the Phoenix Open.
Irwin, six months shy of qualifying for the 50-and-over Senior PGA Tour, shot his second consecutive 5-under-par 66 and Crenshaw, 43, joined him as a co-leader at 132 after a round of 64 that included a five-hole stretch played in 6 under.
Pullman’s Kirk Triplett fired a 65 and is seven strokes behind at 139.
At Manila, Philippines, Sweden’s Robert Karlsson shot a course-record 65, but Nick Price leads at the Johnnie Walker Classic.
Price carded a 5-under-par 67 to stand at 138 after 36 holes of the $960,000 European PGA Tour event, one stroke better than Karlsson and American Fred Couples.
