Daly Rallies At Nissan; Comeback Kid Trails Co-Leaders By Stroke

By Compiled From Wire Services

Jodie Mudd found magic in an old wand Thursday, and for a day, at least, reminded the golf world he is not missing.

Mudd shot a 5-under-par 66 in the first round of the Nissan Open at the Riviera Country Club and shares the first-round lead with Billy Mayfair.

John Daly, shooting his best score since returning to the tour after a five-month layoff, had a 4-under-par 67 to trail the coleaders by one shot.

Daly, whose career has been marked by controversy, sat out the final months of 1994 after being involved in a parking lot scuffle at the World Series of Golf in late August.

He joined six others one shot off the pace, including defending champion Corey Pavin and two-time Nissan winner Lanny Wadkins.

Also at 67 were Craig Stadler, Brad Faxon, Brian Kamm and Jim Furyk.

Pullman’s Kirk Triplett shot a par 71 to finish five off the pace.
