The USA Today coaches preseason poll released Thursday mirrors the AP Top 25 through the top six spots before the first difference. Gonzaga is No. 7 in the coaches’ rankings, one spot ahead of Maryland. The Zags were No. 8 in the AP poll, just behind Maryland.

Gonzaga appears to be in the mix for another highly rated class of 2021 big man from the Pacific Northwest. Nathan Bittle, a 6-foot-10, 180-pound center at Crater High in Center Point, Oregon, indicated he plans to visit the Zags in the near future.

Tillie is tired of talking about injuries for obvious reasons after missing 22 games last season due to a stress fracture and partially torn plantar fascia. The talented, 6-foot-10 forward doesn’t have a target date but it’s possible he could be back for the regular-season opener against Alabama State on Nov. 5.

Domantas Sabonis is staying with the Indiana Pacers, and the former Gonzaga Bulldog will receive a huge pay raise beginning next season. He agreed to a four-year extension worth $77 million guaranteed.

Gonzaga is No. 8 in the preseason AP college basketball poll, matching the 2006 Zags for the program’s second highest preseason rating.

Gonzaga topped Michigan State 103-87 in a preseason scrimmage Saturday in Denver. The Spartans are expected to be ranked No. 1 when the AP preseason poll is released next week. It was an encouraging result for the Zags, who figure to be in the top 10 despite losing their top four scorers from last season.

Gonzaga sells its family atmosphere in recruiting and it apparently applies in coaching searches. For Bell, it worked on two levels. He thoroughly enjoyed his four-year run as a starting guard on some of Gonzaga’s greatest teams. He also wanted his family under one roof after being separated for long stretches while playing in Poland, France and Greece.

Preseason recognition continues to roll in for Gonzaga’s Killian Tillie. The senior forward is one of 20 players on the watch list for the Karl Malone Power Forward of the Year Award.

David Stockton’s training-camp stay with the Los Angeles Lakers is over after 11 days. The Lakers waived Stockton on Tuesday but the former Gonzaga guard could end up playing for the South Bay Lakers, the organization’s G League affiliate.

Gonzaga’s Kraziness in the Kennel scrimmage – often ragged but packed with numerous examples of the team’s considerable potential – had just finished when coach Mark Few noticed his players milling around on the court. He reminded them of the Zags’ post-practice/game tradition of huddling at center court and acknowledging the fans, in this case the 6,000-plus Saturday at the McCarthey Athletic Center.

Gonzaga forward Killian Tillie has been bitten by the injury bug again. The senior forward is sidelined for an unspecified amount of time after undergoing a “knee procedure” Thursday, according to a school release. A source confirmed Tillie had surgery to “clean up” in his knee, so it’s apparently not something too serious.
