NFL capsules: Jimmy Garoppolo shines in 49ers’ 27-17 win over Parick Mahomes, Chiefs

San Francisco quarterback Jimmy Garoppolo was impressive in his return to Arrowhead Stadium, and Chiefs counterpart Patrick Mahomes may have been even better, as the 49ers beat Kansas City 27-17 in their third preseason game. Garoppolo was 14 of 20 for 188 yards while playing the entire first half in a much better showing than his preseason debut against Denver last week.

’Like morons’: Fashion reviews are dim for MLB Players’ Weekend uniforms

“What’s the slogan, `Let the kids play’?” Cleveland Indians manager Terry Francona manager said. “Let the grown-ups look like morons.” That was a common view across the majors and social media on Players’ Weekend, when big leaguers wore uniforms designed to be fresh and fun, complete with nicknames on the back. But rather than a hit, the monochromatic schemes were mostly rated a big swing and miss.

Six injured in lightning strike at Tour Championship in Atlanta

Atlanta police say six people were injured when lightning struck a 60-foot pine at the Tour Championship, showering the area with debris. The third round of the season-ending PGA Tour event had been suspended for about 30 minutes because of storms in the area, and fans were instructed to seek shelter. The strike hit the top of the tree just off the 16th tee and shattered the bark all the way to the bottom.

Ol’ Crimson, the Washington State flag that’s appeared on every ESPN College GameDay set since the 2003 football season, wasn’t to be stifled Saturday morning at Magic Kingdom in Orlando, Florida, despite initial concerns the park’s rules and regulations would be a roadblock for one of the longest streaks in college football.

Home runs help Seattle Mariners past Blue Jays 7-4

Omar Narvaez and J.P. Crawford homered, and the Seattle Mariners beat the Toronto Blue Jays 7-4 for their fifth win in six games. Narvaez led off the second inning with his 18th homer and Crawford did the same leading off the fifth, belting his sixth of the year.

MLB roundup: Didi Gregorius helps Yankees pound Dodgers 10-2

Didi Gregorius hit a grand slam off Hyun-Jin Ryu and added a solo shot to help the Yankees set a club record for homers in a month, and visiting New York routed the Los Angeles Dodgers 10-2 Friday night in a matchup of the two teams with the best records in baseball. Aaron Judge, Gary Sanchez and Gleyber Torres also homered as the Yankees ended a four-game skid. They have a major league-leading 57 homers in August, their most in any month.
