Whitworth Pirates expect to build upon 2018 football success

UPDATED: 5:57 p.m.

By many metrics 2018 was one of the best seasons in Whitworth football history: a 10-1 record and a playoff victory, feats accomplished by only this and the 2006 Whitworth team. Whitworth also broke Linfield’s hold on the Northwest Conference, winning a conference title for the first time since 2007.

Whitworth won’t marvel at Saint John’s pedigree ahead of second-round playoff game

UPDATED: 7:33 p.m.

Four programs – Mount Union, Wisconsin-Whitewater, Mary Hardin-Baylor and Linfield – have won 17 of the past 18 NCAA Division III national football championships. But there’s one notable, cardinal-donning outlier: Saint John’s, the team Whitworth faces in the second round of the playoffs on Saturday in Collegeville, Minnesota.

Strong second half enables Whitworth to defeat Linfield for first time since 2007

UPDATED: Sat., Sept. 29, 2018, 8:42 p.m.

Whitworth came out of halftime and held Linfield without another first down until the final play of the third quarter. By then the Pirates’ offense had started rolling, and Whitworth earned a 19-14 come-from-behind victory over Linfield on Saturday at the Pine Bowl. It was the program’s first over the Wildcats since 2007 and only the Pirates’ sixth in the 45-game series.
