The Seattle Mariners opened the three-game series with a 2-0 win over the Houston Astros on Monday night, marking Seattle's 63rd win of the season. Starting pitcher James Paxton was flawless today for the Mariners, pitching 7.0 innings and striking out eight batters while shutting out the Astros.

The Mariners only runs came in the sixth inning when Nelson Cruz scored two runs on an RBI double, while Seattle held Houston to only four hits in the game.

Closer Edwin Diaz picked up his league-leading 40th save of the season, becoming the fourth player in franchise history to reach that mark in a season - Fernando Rodney (48, 2014), Kazuhiro Sasaki (45, 2001) and J.J. Putz (40, 2007).

The Mariners continue their series against the Astros on Tuesday, with the first pitch set for 7:10 p.m.
