Mattress Firm Student Athlete of the Week Jefferson's Nate Brunett
Nate Brunett wrestles in the 160-pound weight class. As a sophomore, he was All-State. Impressive, considering he tried wrestling after being cut from the basketball team.
"I was no good whatsoever at basketball," Brunett said.
Coach Troy Humphrey was happy the freshman joined the team. Nate arrived with no childhood wrestling experience, which makes his success more astounding.
"To be that successful in high school," Humphrey said, "you need a lot of background. A lot of foundation of little guy wrestling."
To start his junior campaign, Nate placed second at the Cascade Badger Invitational. The team captain went 3-1 through his weight class's 32-man bracket tournament and his teammates take notes of his unprecedented rise.
"It's really uncommon," Nathan Rash said. "I haven't seen it. I haven't spent much time wrestling so that might by why, but I haven't seen it."
When Nate isn't consumed with football and wrestling, he's in the community. In September, he participated in The Run for 75 to benefit suicide prevention.
"I enjoy doing stuff like that especially for the community around here in Boulder," Brunett said.
