Chiefs Fall to Winterhawks in Shootout, 3-2

by Chiefs Media Relations

SPOKANE, Wash. - The Spokane Chiefs battled hard in their fourth game in five nights but could only come away with one point in the standings on Saturday night, losing 3-2 in a shootout to the Portland Winterhawks. Rookie forward Koby Morrisseau scored his first career Western Hockey League goal in the loss.

Morrisseau's goal came at the 17:44 mark of the first period as three Chiefs rookies teamed up to give Spokane a 1-0 lead. Riley McKay forced a turnover on the end wall with a strong forecheck, followed by Logan Foster picking up the loose puck and serving it over to Morrisseau in the slot for the easy chip-in.

The Winterhawks bounced back to tie the game at the 5:21 mark of the second period as Ryan Hughes used a creative hesitation move to get the Chiefs' defenders out of position and roof a shot over starting goaltender Dawson Weatherill's shoulder.

Spokane regained the lead 7:25 into the third period, tapping in another clean cross-crease pass, this time from team-leading scorer Kailer Yamamoto.

Last week's WHL Player of the Week Cody Glass scored his sixth goal of the season on a rebound just over nine minutes later to once again tie the game at two apiece.

After a scoreless overtime frame, Portland's Caleb Jones was the only one of six shooters to score in a shootout, giving the Winterhawks the win.
Weatherill turned aside 28 of 30 shots faced while Portland's Cole Kehler stopped 29. Both played the full 65 minutes.

The Chiefs were 0-for-4 on the power play and 3-for-3 on the penalty kill.

The shootout loss moves the Chiefs to 2-4-1-1 on the season while the Winterhawks jump to 8-3-0-0.
