92-year-old man runs 40th Bloomsday race

SPOKANE, Wash. -

Some might think Bloomsday is a young person's race, but one 92-year-old man proves them wrong.

Warren Heylman has had the same Bloomsday spirit for the past 40 years. He’s participated in all the races and loves coming back.

“Just to see my friends and because I love to run. Only I'm not running these days. I'm walking,” Warren says with a smile.

Back when Bloomsday started, he says he was grouped by age.

“They said all you guys over 50 go to the back and that made it even more difficult to run.”

Now in 2016, he's starting near the front, and things have changed a bit.

“Now I work my way to the back pretty quickly,” he says.

He loves finding inspiration every year to keep going. One year it came from a woman in a wheelchair.

“She was going along,” he remembers. “She got to the top of the hill and just let it go. Everybody was afraid she was going to tip over and everybody was yelling, ‘gangway! Clear the path!’ She was an inspiration.”

Of course, when asked if he’s excited to run, he responds that he’s not sure if he is running, but “a fast walk is a run.”
