Bloomsday 2016: Langat Wins Men's Elite, Limo Sets Women's Course Record

Cynthia Limo set a new Bloomsday course record in the Women's Elite Division finishing with a time of 38:03.7 Cynthia Limo set a new Bloomsday course record in the Women's Elite Division finishing with a time of 38:03.7

Men's Elite Division

Bloomsday rookie Eliud Ngetich learned that it's not how you start, but how you finish at Bloomsday.  The 22 year old Kenyan jumped out to an early lead in the men's field, running the day's fastest mile at 4:26.  But everything changed on the incline up Spokane's Riverside Avenue, as the pack tightened to four elite runners, led by Philemon Cheboi.  Waiting patiently in the middle of that pack was the man wearing the race's #1 bib, Philip Langat of Kenya.  He patiently lurked in the middle of the pack, and helped himself to the course's first water station.  The move cost him a little ground, but it would pay off when no one else in the lead pack indulged in the water.

"It was a little hot," Langat said.  "The water helped me make sure I was strong when I finished."

Not taking water came back to haunt the rookie Ngetich, who fell out of contention coming down Fort George Wright Drive nearing mile four.  Even #2 bib Isaac Mwangi, felt the effects of the heat, falling out of the front with a sideache.

The turning point came at Doomsday Hill, where Langet and Cheboi briefly traded leads, before the 26 year-old Kenyan pushed ahead.  Langat never looked back, easily distancing himself from Cheboi and the rest of the men's field.  He was all alone by the time he cruised down Monroe Street, winning his first-ever Bloomsday with a time of 34:26.

"It wasn't my fastest time," Langat said.  "It was my second time here, and last time I finished fourth.  This time I won.  And I am happy for that."

Women's Elite Division

Defending champion Cynthia Limo showed the field why she was awarded the #1 bib in the 40th running of Bloomsday. Limo paced the pack the whole race, as the competition dwindled from a dozen down to three runners just three miles into the race. Three-time champion Lineth Chepkurui and Aliphine Tuliamot-Bolton tried to keep paced with the 26 year old Kenyan, but Limo used the downhill before doomsday hill to take a commanding lead.

First place was never in doubt, but Limo had her sights set on history. Six miles into the race, she was five seconds off the record pace. Then, after running a 4:59 seventh mile, she was just a second back of the pace. Limo sprinted to the finish on Monroe Street with a record-setting time of 38:03.7, beating Chepkurui’s old record of 38:10 set in 2010.

Limo becomes the first women’s elite repeat champion since Chepkurui won three-straight Bloomsdays from 2008 to 2010.

Wheelchair Competition

Men's elite winner: James Senbeta

It took five trips to Spokane, but James Senbeta finally won Bloomsday in 2016. He beat two-time champion Scott Parson, and held off Laurens Molina on Doomsday Hill.

"It feels great actually. I was a little bit worried about Laurens because he's a great climber," said Senbeta. "I figured if I didn't get enough breakaway from him I could get caught on Doomsday. I wish I could've done Doomsday a little bit harder, but I figured with the lead I had I could do enough of it and still be able to kick once I got up to the top."

Women's elite winner: Susannah Scaroni.

The Tekoa-native wins Bloomsday for the first-time since 2014, and her third victory in the last four years.

"I was pretty sure I wasn't going to race last night, so it's really cool," said Scaroni. "I'm only here because of the support I receive from this community so it's nice to show them it paid off."
