PARKLAND, Wash. – The Whitworth women's basketball team closed out the regular season in impressive fashion with an 83-63 win at Pacific Lutheran on Saturday night at Olson Auditorium.

The Pirates will head into the 2016 Northwest Conference tournament with a 15-10 record.  Whitworth finished 10-6 in the NWC and tied for third in the league standings with Whitman.  But the Pirates will be the fourth seed and will take on top-seeded George Fox on Thursday.

Whitworth trailed only twice in the game after PLU led 2-0 and 4-2.  Faith Emerson answered for the Bucs with a three-pointer and the Pirates never trailed again.  Chloe Quinnett hit a 16-foot jumper just before the first quarter buzzer to give Whitworth a 25-19 lead after one quarter.

The Pirates continued to stretch the advantage in the second period, scoring the first eight points of the quarter to go up 33-19.  Two KC McConnell free throws increased the lead to 40-22 before Whitworth took a 40-25 lead into halftime.

The Bucs made 50% (16-32) of their field goals in the first half and all five of their free throw attempts.  Whitworth forced 13 PLU turnovers in the opening two quarters.

After Sarah Barnes scored the first basket of the second half for PLU (9-16 overall, 5-11 NWC), the Pirates scored the next six points to take their largest lead of the game (46-27) to that point.  Taylor Flemming's three-pointer gave the Bucs their first 20-point advantage at 51-30 and Callie Harwood added another trey on Whitworth's next possession.

The Pirates took their largest lead of the game (77-50) early in the fourth quarter.

McConnell led four Whitworth players in double figures with 17 points and she added seven rebounds and five assists.  Emerson finished with 14 points while Harwood scored 13 and Flemming finished with a dozen.  Whitworth finished the game 29-64 (45.3%) from the floor and 19-22 (86.4%) from the free throw line.

Michaela Edgers led PLU with 11 points, while Barnes and Samantha Kelleigh each scored ten.  The Lutes won the battle of the boards 41-31, but ended the game with 23 turnovers.

Undefeated George Fox, ranked second in Division III basketball, is the NWC regular season champion and top-seed in the NWC tournament.  Second-place Puget Sound is the #2 seed.  Whitworth and Whitman tied for third in the final conference standings, but Whitman will be the #3 seed based on results against NWC opponents in descending order.
