McConnell Hits Milestone as Pirate Women Score Win Over Pacific

by Whitworth Athletics

SPOKANE, Wash. – KC McConnell’s double-double of 25 points and 10 rebounds led Whitworth to a 73-64 win over visiting Pacific University in a Northwest Conference women’s basketball game on Saturday night in the Whitworth Fieldhouse.

McConnell surpassed 1,500 points for her career and moved into third place on Whitworth’s all-time scoring list as the Pirates improved to 13-8 overall and 8-4 in the NWC.

Whitworth led throughout the first quarter after jumping out to a 12-2 lead six minutes into the game.  Faith Emerson had eight of those points after she made her first two baskets and went 4-4 at the free throw line.  But Pacific scored the next eight points, including three-pointers by Sarah Curl and Karli McHone, to get within 12-10.  The Pirates led 17-13 after one quarter.

The Boxers (10-11 overall, 5-7 NWC) continued to claw back early in the second period, taking their first lead at 18-17 on a basket by McHone.  After Sarah Alinis scored for Pacific to tie the game 22-22 with just over five minutes left in the first half, Whitworth closed the period on an 11-2 run.  A Jessica Thoens three gave the Bucs a 33-22 lead, but Lauren Lykins scored just before the buzzer to make the score 33-24.

A Grace Douglas three-pointer gave Whitworth its largest lead of the game, 43-28, early in the third quarter.  The Boxers answered with a 7-0 run to get back within 43-35 after a basket by Kyla Siri.  However McHone, who led Pacific with 13 points at that point, left with her fourth foul late in the third and the Pirates took a 51-39 lead into the final period.

But McHone and Curl hit consecutive three-pointers to start the fourth quarter and the Boxers were quickly back within 51-45.  After Curl made 1-2 free throws to get Pacific within 56-51, Chloe Quinnett hit two consecutive jumpers to extend Whitworth’s lead back to nine points.  Then the Boxers made their final run, getting within 63-59 after Curl hit a short jumper with 2:10 to play.  Quinnett answered again with another basket that stemmed the tide and Pacific could get no closer.

Emerson finished with 15 points for the Pirates.  She and McConnell were the only players in double figures.  But Quinnett scored all eight of her points in the fourth quarter.  Thoens dished six assists in the game.  Whitworth shot a season-high 52.1% from the field.

Curl scored a game-high 26 points and grabbed nine rebounds to lead the Boxers.  McHone finished with 16 points and Siri totaled a dozen.  Kaela Collins dished four assists off of the bench.

The Pirates will take a three-game winning streak into next Friday’s home game against 2nd-ranked George Fox University.
