FLAGSTAFF, Ariz. – A late comeback effort was not enough, as Idaho (14-10, 6-5 BSC) fell to Northern Arizona (4-18, 2-9 BSC), 72-70, in a back-and-forth matchup on Saturday afternoon.

“Credit to Northern Arizona, but I didn’t think we were tough enough tonight,” said head coach Don Verlin.  “I thought they were able to do some things that we were trying to prevent tonight.  We didn’t do a good enough job of sealing our gaps, we didn’t do a good enough job of defending without fouling.  We didn’t do a good enough job of rebounding.  Those 10 offensive rebounds are something we can’t allow.”

It truly was a back-and-forth game, with 13 ties and 16 lead changes.  Idaho led by two with 5:28 to play, but ran into a cold stretch from there, allowing the Lumberjacks to take an eight point lead of their own.  The Vandals didn’t give up, fighting to the final buzzer, but Pat Ingram’s desperation heave at the horn went begging.

Four different Vandals scored in double-figures, led by Arkadiy Mkrtychyan’s 15.  Nate Sherwood recorded his first career double-double with 10 points and a career-high 10 boards.  Ty Egbert finished with 11, Chris Sarbaugh finished with 10.

Idaho couldn’t get it going from beyond the arc, going 2-of-9 (22.2%) on the day.  NAU took advantage of the 3-ball, going 11-of-27 (40.7%).  The Vandals did attack the glass well, outrebounding the Lumberjacks 46-29.

The Vandals trailed by two at the half, 34-32, after the Lumberjacks closed the frame on a 7-0 run.

Idaho dominated in the paint, outscoring NAU 34-16 in that category.  The killer for the Vandals again came in the form of turnovers, as Idaho committed 17 to just nine by NAU.
