by Whitworth Athletics

SPOKANE, Wash. – Whitworth University is ranked #1 in today’s D3hoops.com men’s top-25 poll.

The Pirates (13-0) moved up one spot after previous #1 Augustana (Ill.) fell at Elmhurst in overtime last week.

Whitworth, off to the second-best start to a season in school history, is atop the D3hoops.com poll for only the second time ever.  The Pirates were ranked 1st for three weeks in 2010-11, including the final regular season D3hoops.com poll on Feb. 27, 2011 heading into the Division III national tournament.

At that time Whitworth was the first NCAA member school in the state of Washington to be ranked #1 during the regular season.

“What a neat day to be a Pirate!” said Whitworth head coach Matt Logie. “Very few athletes or coaches have the opportunity to be a part of something like this, so that alone makes it a really special thing. But in all honesty, we’ve been building this program with the intention of being in this conversation for a long time.  All of our former players, coaches, and administration have invested a great deal into this. Our current team has really busted their tails and done it together, it’s really exciting that they’ve been able to capitalize on that opportunity and continue to show the country what this program is capable of. It’s a tremendous honor and we’re really excited about the opportunity to showcase Whitworth on such a grand scale. ”

The Pirates picked up 15 out of 25 possible first place votes.  Elmhurst moved up from 5th to second in the poll after the upset of Augustana.  Augustana dropped to third.  Elmhurst, Augustana, Hope and Benedictine all received first place votes in today’s poll.

Whitworth will get to put its #1 ranking on the line on Friday and Saturday at Willamette and George Fox, respectively.
