SANTA CRUZ, Calif. – Faith Emerson scored 18 points while Callie Harwood posted a double-double to lead Whitworth to a 64-59 win over Chapman in a non-conference women’s basketball game on Sunday afternoon at UC Santa Cruz.

The Pirates improved to 6-3 with their third straight victory.  It is their longest winning streak of the season so far and the Bucs are now 5-1 against NCAA Division III opponents.

After Chapman (2-5) took a 7-6 lead on Courtney Krysl’s three-pointer, Whitworth closed the first quarter on a 7-2 run to take a 13-9 lead after the first period.  Grace Douglas hit a three-pointer and Sidney Riggs made a pair of free throws to close the run.

The Panthers came back to tie the game 17-17 on a layup by Natalia Ebrahimian, but Whitworth finished the second quarter on another 7-2 run to take a 24-19 lead into halftime.  Taylor Fleming hit a three-pointer and Emerson hit a jumper just before the buzzer.

Neither team shot well in the first half.  While Whitworth made only 9-23 (39%) from the floor, the Panthers were even colder at 6-37 (16%).  Chapman was able to stay close by forcing 13 Pirate turnovers.

Whitworth scored the first two baskets of the second half to open a 28-19 lead and it looked like the Bucs might pull away.  But Chapman was able to climb back to within 34-33 at the end of the third period after another layup by Ebrahimian.

The offenses finally got going in the fourth quarter as Whitworth outscored the Panthers 30-26, nearly doubling both teams’ points through the first three periods.  There were eight lead changes and three ties over the first five and a half minutes of the period.  A pair of Krysl free throws gave Chapman its final led (47-46) with 4:38 left, but Emerson answered with a three-pointer and then converted a three-point play on the Bucs’ next possession to give Whitworth a 52-47 lead.  The Pirates would not trail again.

Emerson scored nine of her team-high 18 points in the fourth quarter.  Harwood finished with 12 points and a career-high 11 rebounds for her first double-double as a Pirate.  KC McConnell’s run of 30-point games came to an end.  But she finished with 14 points, six rebounds, five assists and five blocked shots to contribute all over the floor.  Jessica Thoens also had five assists and added five boards as Whitworth finished with a 48-37 edge in rebounding.

Ebrahimian scored a game-high 19 points and grabbed eight rebounds for Chapman while Jamie Hum-Nishikado added 14 points.

Whitworth will take a break for Christmas before returning to action next week at the Music City Classic in Nashville, Tennessee where the Pirates will play Babson (Mass.) on December 29th and Eureka (Ill.) on the 30th.
