SPOKANE, Wash. – Christian Jurlina scored 23 points in only 20 minutes of action to lead 2nd-ranked Whitworth to an 86-47 win over visiting Millsaps College on Saturday afternoon at the Whitworth Fieldhouse.

The Pirates improved to 9-0 this season and head into their Christmas break.  The Majors dropped to 1-7 and will play at Whitman College in Walla Walla on Sunday.

Whitworth never trailed, jumping to a 12-2 lead four minutes into the game.  Jurlina scored twice while Kenny Love and Matt Staudacher each hit three-pointers in the opening run.  Millsaps was able to pull within 12-8 five minutes later on a jumper by Blake Jones, but that is as close as the Majors would get.  Whitworth retook a ten-point lead (18-8) on a basket by Drew Sears and eventually stretched the first half lead to 38-20 at the break.  Jurlina had 17 of his points in the first half as the Pirates made 52% (15-29) of their shots from the floor.

Whitworth opened the second half on a 13-4 run, taking a 51-24 lead on a Jurlina three-pointer, and the Bucs were never threatened in the second half.  AJ Grant, making his first appearance of the season for the Pirates, converted a four-point play with 11:02 to go to make the score 61-28.  Whitworth led by as many as 44 points late in the game while every player on the bench saw action in the final stretch.

"It's great to be able to play everybody and give the guys who work so hard in practice a chance to compete in the game," said Whitworth head coach Matt Logie.

The Pirates posted their most efficient offense performance of the season.  They made 49% (31-63) of their shots from the floor, but more telling was that they had a season-high 26 assists on their 31 baskets.  Staudacher had five of those.

"Today's highlight was the way we moved the basketball," Logie said.  "It demonstrated our guys' unselfishness and how they like to play the game."

Jurlina made 9-12 from the floor, 5-8 from three-point range, for his 23 points.  He only had to play six minutes in the second half and 20 minutes in the game.  Derek Isaak sank four three-pointers off of the bench and finished with 14 points.  George Valle ended the game with 12 points, five rebounds and three assists.  Thirteen different Pirate players scored points in the game.

Whitworth finished with a 39-27 edge in rebounding.

Trent Markwith was the only Millsaps player to hit double figures, finishing with 12 points.  Alex Gerchow had nine points off of the bench.  The Majors were 19-52 (36.5%) from the floor, including only 1-11 (9%) from three-point range.

Whitworth will return to action on December 29th at the D3hoops.com Classic in Las Vegas, where they will take on Calvin College.
