Fullerton, Calif. - Taking command of the game from the offensive end, the Eastern Washington University women's basketball team shot 48.1 percent from the field, on its way to a 68-57 victory on the road, over Cal State Fullerton on Sunday afternoon, Dec. 13. EWU improves to 5-4 with the win, while Cal State Fullerton falls to 2-9 with the loss.

Eastern began the game shooting lights out, with seven first half three-pointers on 13 attempts, for a percentage of 53.8. The Eagles capitalized on their three point hot streak as CSUF struggled from the field, shooting 32.1 percent from the field and 26.7 percent from three. Contributions came early and often from EWU's starting five, as it scored all but two of the Eagles' 36 first-half points. EWU controlled the ball well with seven turnovers compared to 12 for the Titans, leading to the 36-26 Eastern lead at half.

The impressive long range shooting continued for EWU in the second half, matching their first half total of seven makes, while doing it at a 46.7 percent clip. The defense continued to apply pressure forcing seven additional turnovers, and holding the Cal State Fullerton team to 39.1 percent shooting in the second half.

Hayley Hodgins led the Eagles with a season high 25 points, on 9-of-17 shooting from the field and 7-of-11 shooting from beyond the arc. She added on four assists and two rebounds. Sophomore Delaney Hodgins scored 19 on the day, shooting 6-of-9 from the field, and 5-of-6 from three. She controlled the floor defensively with a career high five blocks in the game. Junior Ashli Payne scored 12 points, while adding on five rebounds, three steals, and three assists. Junior Tisha Phillips scored 10 points on 4-of-7 shooting and tallied four assists on offense, and defensively earned six rebounds and three steals.

EWU kept the lead the entire game, shooting 50 percent from three on 14-of-28 shooting, and hit on 48.1 percent of their shots from the field, while CSUF shot 35.3 percent overall, and 29.6 percent from three-point range.

Eastern created 19 turnovers on defense, while keeping their miscues to a total of 13.

"I thought we came out shooting well from the start, which was huge for us," said head coach Wendy Schuller. It gave us confidence and momentum early, and we were able to continue that throughout the game. Cal State Fullerton mixed up its defenses quite a bit, and I thought we did a good job of responding and getting into appropriate sets versus what we were seeing defensively. To me, that shows that we're growing. We fouled a little too much in the second half, but to go on the road and shoot the ball as well as we did is great."

The Eagles' road trip continues against Wichita State on Tuesday, Dec. 15. The game tips off at 5:05 p.m. PST.
