WALLA WALLA, Wash. – KC McConnell posted her second consecutive 30-point game to lead Whitworth to a 66-53 victory over Southwestern (Texas) in the final game of the Kim Evanger Raney Classic at Whitman College.

McConnell’s big game came one day after she posted a career-high 35 against Cal Lutheran.  She was named MVP of the tournament.

Whitworth (4-3) used its best defensive quarter of the season to grab an 11-2 lead at the end of the first period and the Pirates would never trail in the game.  Whitworth held Southwestern (1-7), also known as the Pirates, to only 1-10 shooting from the floor and forced 10 turnovers.

The Pirates from Washington took their largest lead of the first half at 15-3 on Faith Emerson’s basket 90 seconds into the second quarter.  Southwestern finally got its offense on track in the second period however, and got within six points twice.  The final time was 27-21 on a basket by Olivia Podaras with 1:42 left in the half.  Brian Maley’s hustle led to a rebound and shot attempt just before the buzzer.  She hit both attempts to give Whitworth a 33-23 lead at the break.

The Pirates made 10-29 (34.5%) from the floor in the first half and were 12-18 (67%) from the free throw line.  Southwestern finished the first half 10-25 (40%), but the Texas Pirates committed 18 first half turnovers.

Southwestern closed to within 40-31 midway through the third quarter, before Whitworth answered with a quick 6-0 run.  Three points each from Sidney Riggs and KC McConnell made the score 46-31 and Whitworth took a 48-34 lead into the final stanza.

Brianna Turney’s basket pulled Southwestern to within 50-42 90 seconds into the final quarter.  But the Texas Pirates would get no closer.  McConnell answered with a three-point basket and a three-point play.  Then Faith Cebula put back her own miss to finish off an 8-0 run that gave Whitworth an insurmountable 58-42 lead with 5:12 to play in the game.

Whitworth shot exactly the same (10-29) in the second half as the first.  The Pirates struggled from three-point range (3-17, 18%) throughout the game, but finished with a 47-36 advantage on the boards.

McConnell added a team-high eight rebounds to go along with her 30 points.  Emerson finished with 13 points and six boards, while Jessica Thoens dished five assists.

Madison Edwards had 13 points off of the bench for Southwestern and Poderas finished with a dozen points.  Southwestern finished the game 19-59 (32%) from the floor.

Whitworth will return to action next weekend with a pair of games at UC Santa Cruz.  After taking on host UCSC on Saturday the Pirates will play Chapman (Calif.) in a neutral-site game on Sunday.
