Clifford Scores 18 As Washington State Rolls Past Cal State Los Angeles

PULLMAN — Conor Clifford led a balanced Washington State offense with 18 points as the Cougars rolled to a 74-57 win over Cal State Los Angeles on Tuesday night.

Que Johnson scored 15 points for the Cougars (3-0) at Beasley Coliseum. WSU played without leading scorer and rebounder Josh Hawkinson, who sat out with a groin injury.

Joshua Munzon led the Golden Eagles (0-5), an NCAA Division II team, with 24 points. Munzon sank 11 of 13 shots from the field.

The Eagles shot 42.3 percent from the field, compared to 53.8 percent for Washington State.

The Cougars led from the opening minutes and built a 37-25 lead by halftime. Munzon sank all seven of his field-goal attempts in the half for 15 points. Only three other Eagles scored by halftime, and Geoffrey Frid (six points) was the only one of those players with more than two points.

Coach Ernie Kent said Gonzaga plans to indefinitely end their long-running series with the Cougars after next Wednesday’s game in Pullman. The two schools have played most years since 1907. Kent said the Cougars want to continue the series, but the Bulldogs wish to pursue other options that fit their scheduling needs better.
