SPOKANE, Wash. – Third-ranked Whitworth survived a determined effort from visiting Caltech before pulling away for an 80-58 win over the visiting Beavers on Friday night in the Whitworth Fieldhouse.

The Pirates improved to 2-0 while Caltech fell to 1-1.

After Whitworth opened a 19-point lead at halftime (42-23), the Beavers opened the second half on a 14-3 run, pulling within 45-37 on a layup by Nassar Al-Rayes.  The Pirates extended the lead back to 55-39 on a basket by Matt Staudacher, but Caltech would not go away.  The Beavers got back within 60-51 on Lawrence Lee’s three-pointer with 8:17 to play.  That’s as close as Caltech would get.  Whitworth outscored the Beavers 20-7 over the final eight minutes.

Kenny Love led the Pirates with 19 points, while George Valle added 15 points and nine rebounds.  Staudacher finished with 10 points and six assists.  Whitworth finished the game 30-66 (45.5%) from the field while struggling (6-28, 21.4%) from three-point range.  The Bucs finished with a 43-33 edge on the boards.

Al-Rayes led Caltech with 19 points and six rebounds while KC Emezie chipped in with 16 points and five boards.  The Beavers shot 20-54 (37%) from the floor, 6-19 (31.6%) from beyond the arc.

Whitworth will take on NAIA-member Northwest University on Saturday night at 7:00 pm.  Caltech travels to play at Whitman College.
